Boston Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
Boston's packing challenges are wind chill and terrain. The harbor and Charles River corridor amplify winter cold significantly — 28°F feels like 15°F. Beacon Hill's cobblestone streets and the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail make heels impractical year-round. April swings wildly between 35°F and 70°F within a single week. Summers are genuinely warm at 83°F; fall is Boston's best season for weather and foliage.
By Season
22–42°F
Winter (December–February)
Boston's winter is raw and wind-exposed — January lows reach 22°F and the Boston Harbor and Charles River wind corridors drop the feels-like temperature to 10–15°F. December brings the year's most precipitation days at 12. A heavy parka, waterproof insulated boots, and full face and hand coverage are required. The Freedom Trail and Beacon Hill cobblestones demand flat grip-soled footwear regardless of conditions.
- Heavy insulated parka
- Waterproof grip-soled ankle boots for Beacon Hill
- Thermal base layers top and bottom
- Neck gaiter and insulated gloves
33–68°F
Spring (March–May)
Boston spring is famously unpredictable — March is still near-winter at 48°F, April notoriously swings from 35°F to 70°F within a week, and May finally settles into reliable 68°F warmth. The Boston Marathon runs on Patriots' Day in April, typically in variable conditions. Layering is the only strategy from March through May.
- Mid-weight waterproof coat
- Light layers for wide temperature swings
- Packable rain jacket
- Comfortable flat shoes for the Freedom Trail
62–83°F
Summer (June–August)
Boston's summer is genuinely warm and humid — July peaks at 83°F with 67°F lows. The Charles River Esplanade, Boston Harbor Islands, and the Emerald Necklace parks are at their best. Light summer clothes handle the warm days, but Boston's harbor breeze creates a chill on the waterfront even in July. Afternoon thunderstorms bring 9–10 rain days per month.
- Lightweight summer tops and dresses
- Comfortable walking shoes for the Freedom Trail
- Sunscreen for harbor and Esplanade time
- Compact umbrella for afternoon storms
40–74°F
Fall (September–November)
Fall is Boston's best season — September at 74°F is warm and clear, October brings spectacular New England foliage at 63°F, and November cools to 40°F lows with the first cold rains. The Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, and the Back Bay brownstone streets are particularly beautiful in October's fall color. A mid-weight coat arrives in October; the winter parka returns by late November.
- Light jacket for September
- Mid-weight coat for October foliage walks
- Heavy parka for November
- Comfortable flat shoes for Freedom Trail and Beacon Hill

General Packing Tips for Boston
- 1.Boston's harbor and Charles River wind corridors are the defining winter packing variable — the feels-like temperature on the Boston Harbor waterfront and the Charles River Esplanade is typically 10–15°F colder than the air temperature reading. Always dress for the waterfront temperature, not the inland forecast.
- 2.The Freedom Trail's 2.5 miles of brick and the Beacon Hill neighborhood's cobblestone streets make heels and smooth-soled shoes genuinely risky year-round — rain, ice, and uneven brick surfaces create regular fall hazards for visitors in fashion footwear. Flat, grip-soled shoes are the correct choice for any serious Boston walking day.
- 3.Boston's April is the city's most notorious packing challenge — the month genuinely swings from 35°F to 70°F within a single week, and the Boston Marathon weekend in mid-April frequently sees runners in both tank tops and emergency mylar blankets in the same race. Pack a full range of layers for any April Boston visit.
