Chicago Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
Chicago packs harder than almost any major US city. Winter wind off Lake Michigan drops feels-like temperatures 15–25°F below the thermometer — a 20°F day can feel like 0°F on the Mag Mile. Spring lasts about three weeks before humidity arrives. Summer brings severe thunderstorms alongside genuine warmth. Pack in full season blocks; there's no shortcut here.
By Season
17–36°F
Winter (December–February)
Chicago's winter is legitimately extreme. Highs hover at 32–36°F, lows drop to 17–22°F, and Lake Michigan wind makes every exposed stretch of the Mag Mile and Riverwalk feel 15–25°F colder. This is a parka-and-base-layer situation, not a heavy jacket situation.
- Knee-length down or wool parka
- Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
- Windproof insulated gloves
- Waterproof winter boots with traction
31–70°F
Spring (March–May)
Chicago spring is narrow — March is still cold at 48°F, April is variable (42–59°F), and May warms toward 70°F but stays rainy with 11 precipitation days. By late May the warmth arrives fast. Layering is the entire strategy here; a light rainproof jacket covers most of this window.
- Waterproof rain jacket
- Mid-layer fleece or wool sweater
- Comfortable walking shoes or ankle boots
- Compact umbrella
61–84°F
Summer (June–August)
Chicago summers are warm and humid with highs reaching 84°F in July. Lake Michigan keeps lakeshore areas noticeably cooler but inland neighborhoods hit real heat. Summer thunderstorms are intense and frequent — 9–10 rain days per month. Light breathable layers and a packable rain jacket are the summer essentials.
- Breathable linen or cotton tops
- Packable waterproof rain jacket
- Comfortable walking shoes
- SPF 50+ sunscreen
35–74°F
Fall (September–November)
Chicago fall starts beautifully in September (74°F) and declines rapidly — October drops to 62°F and November hits 48°F with 10 rainy days and returning Lake wind. Pack a jacket in September, a real coat by October, and full winter outerwear for November.
- Medium-weight coat or wool jacket
- Layers for rapid temperature drops
- Waterproof ankle boots
- Scarf and light gloves for November

General Packing Tips for Chicago
- 1.Chicago's Lake Michigan wind is the most underestimated packing variable — always check the wind speed, not just the temperature; a 25°F day with 20 mph lake wind feels like -5°F on the Magnificent Mile.
- 2.The Magnificent Mile and Chicago Riverwalk are essential Chicago experiences but require substantial walking on exposed, wind-channeled streets — stylish ankle boots are fine, but heels and thin-soled shoes are actively uncomfortable year-round.
- 3.Chicago's L train platforms are completely exposed to weather — pack an extra layer in a bag for the commute even if it feels unnecessary at street level, because the elevated platforms in winter feel significantly colder than ground level.
