Austin Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
Austin has a humid subtropical climate with brutally hot summers that push past 97°F with high humidity and mild winters where the main hazard is rare but disruptive ice storms. Spring and fall bring the city's famous music festivals — SXSW in March and Austin City Limits in October — where layering for variable weather is essential. The city's eclectic style mixes sundresses with cowboy boots, and outdoor life centers on Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Park, and the 6th Street entertainment district.
By Season
39–64°F
Winter (December–February)
Austin winters are mild — highs reach the low-to-mid 60s°F — but overnight lows dip to the upper 30s and rare ice storms can shut the city down entirely, as the February 2021 event proved. A mid-weight coat, one waterproof pair of shoes, and layering sweaters handle the full range. Expect 7–8 rainy days per month.
- Mid-weight coat or insulated jacket
- Waterproof shoes (ice storm insurance)
- Layering sweaters and knit tops
- Compact travel umbrella
49–85°F
Spring (March–May)
Austin spring is festival season — SXSW in March draws hundreds of thousands to the city — and the weather swings from 49°F March mornings to 85°F May afternoons. Spring is also Austin's rainiest period with 8–9 wet days per month, including severe thunderstorms. Pack layers for the temperature range, a packable rain jacket, and comfortable walking shoes for the miles of pavement on 6th Street and at Zilker Park.
- Packable waterproof rain jacket
- Comfortable walking shoes for festival days
- Light layering pieces for 30°F+ daily swings
- Breathable cotton or linen tops for warm afternoons
72–97°F
Summer (June–August)
Austin summer is extreme — highs average 92–97°F with humidity that makes the heat index feel 100°F+. July and August are the driest months at 5 rainy days each, but the heat is relentless. Linen and cotton are mandatory; synthetic fabrics overheat fast. Outdoor life shifts to Barton Springs Pool and early-morning or late-evening Zilker Park visits. Pack the lightest, most breathable fabrics you own.
- Lightweight linen or cotton tops and dresses
- Swimwear for Barton Springs Pool
- SPF 50 sunscreen
- Wide-brim hat for sun protection
48–90°F
Fall (September–November)
Fall is Austin's best season — September starts hot at 90°F but cools to 70°F by November, and Austin City Limits Music Festival in October is the city's biggest event. Humidity eases, rain is moderate at 6–7 days per month, and the outdoor patios along South Congress and Rainey Street become comfortable again. Pack warm-weather basics for early fall and layering pieces for the cooler second half.
- Light jacket or denim jacket for October evenings
- Comfortable walking shoes for ACL Festival
- Breathable warm-weather tops for early fall
- Light sweater for November's cooler mornings

General Packing Tips for Austin
- 1.Austin's summer heat is the defining packing challenge: 96–97°F with high humidity means synthetic and polyester fabrics overheat significantly faster than linen or cotton — choose natural fibers for every summer top, dress, and bottom layer, especially if you'll be walking 6th Street or exploring Zilker Park.
- 2.Comfortable flat walking shoes are non-negotiable in Austin year-round: 6th Street's entertainment district, South Congress Avenue, and Zilker Park all involve extended walking on pavement and uneven terrain — heeled shoes are impractical for Austin's casual, walking-heavy culture.
- 3.Austin's rare winter ice storms (like February 2021) can shut the city down completely — one waterproof pair of shoes with grip soles packed from December through February provides insurance against an event that locals take seriously even though it only happens every few years.
