New York Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
New York City demands a wardrobe that works as hard as the city itself. Winters are brutally cold — wind funnels between Midtown skyscrapers can make 35°F feel like 15°F — while summers are hot and humid with lows that rarely dip below 65°F in July. Spring and fall are NYC's sweetest seasons: mild temperatures with enough rainy days to justify a compact umbrella in every bag. Year-round, plan for 5+ miles of daily walking on concrete and the occasional cobblestone block in SoHo, so comfort footwear is always non-negotiable.
By Season
26–43°F
Winter (December–February)
NYC winters are genuinely harsh. Temperatures hover between 26–43°F and the East River and Hudson River wind corridors amplify the cold by 10–20°F on exposed streets. Expect 10–11 precipitation days per month — a mix of rain, sleet, and snow. A long, insulated coat and waterproof boots are not optional; they are the foundation of every outfit from December through February.
- Long insulated puffer or wool coat
- Waterproof ankle or knee boots
- Thermal base layer set
- Chunky scarf, warm hat, and insulated gloves
35–71°F
Spring (March–May)
Spring in New York is unpredictable but beautiful. March can still bring snow flurries at 35°F lows while May warms to 71°F highs. All three spring months average 11 precipitation days — among the highest of the year — making a packable rain jacket or quality umbrella mandatory. Layers you can shed by noon are the smartest approach.
- Trench coat or water-resistant jacket
- Compact travel umbrella
- Light mid-layer (cardigan or denim jacket)
- Comfortable walking flats or low-heeled boots
64–85°F
Summer (June–August)
New York summers are hot and humid — July highs reach 85°F with lows of 70°F, and the humidity from the surrounding harbor makes it feel hotter still. NYC still averages 10–11 rain days per month in summer, so a compact umbrella earns its weight. The subway platforms trap heat and can be 15–20°F hotter than street level, making lightweight, breathable fabrics a must. Resist the urge to overpack — more than two light layers outdoors will be suffocating.
- Breathable linen or cotton tops
- Lightweight sundress or shorts
- Compact umbrella
- Moisture-wicking socks and comfortable sneakers or sandals
41–76°F
Fall (September–November)
Fall is NYC's most stylish season. September is warm at 76°F highs and the rain eases slightly; by November lows drop to 41°F and a proper coat returns. This is peak fashion season in the city — layering is both practical and on-trend. The cobblestone blocks in SoHo and Tribeca demand low block heels or flat ankle boots rather than stilettos.
- Tailored blazer or light wool coat
- Ankle boots with a low heel or flat sole
- Versatile mid-weight scarf
- Mix of light and medium-weight layers

General Packing Tips for New York
- 1.Plan for 5+ miles of walking daily — NYC tourists average more steps per day than almost any other U.S. city, so stylish comfort footwear is non-negotiable regardless of season.
- 2.NYC averages 11 precipitation days in peak spring and summer months, higher than most U.S. cities at that time of year — a compact travel umbrella belongs in your bag year-round, not just in winter.
- 3.Subway platforms and cars run year-round AC in summer and heat in winter but both are unpredictable — dress in easy-to-shed layers so you can adjust between the freezing train car and the humid August platform in seconds.
