San Francisco Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
San Francisco has an oceanic Mediterranean climate with the narrowest temperature range of any major US city — lows in the mid-40s°F and highs rarely above 70°F year-round. The surprise: SF summer (June–August) is the city's coldest and foggiest stretch, with daily highs of just 67–68°F. September and October are actually the warmest months. Every SF packing list needs a windproof layer, waterproof footwear, and flat-soled shoes for the city's relentlessly steep hills.
By Season
46–60°F
Winter (December–February)
San Francisco winter is the city's rainiest stretch — December and January each average 11 rainy days, February 10. Temperatures are mild at 46–60°F but the Bay wind on the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf makes it feel significantly colder. A waterproof coat, rain boots or waterproof ankle boots, and a compact umbrella are the core winter kit.
- Waterproof trench coat or rain jacket
- Waterproof ankle boots
- Mid-weight sweaters (2–3)
- Compact travel umbrella
49–65°F
Spring (March–May)
Spring rain eases gradually — 10 days in March, 7 in April, 4 in May. Temperatures warm slightly to the low 60s by May but Karl the Fog still makes mornings cool and unpredictable. The Mission District and Dolores Park start showing their sun-trap warmth in April and May while the Sunset District stays foggy. Layers and a waterproof shell remain the priority.
- Light waterproof jacket or shell
- Long-sleeve tops and light sweaters
- Waterproof sneakers or ankle boots
- Sunglasses (for the sunny neighborhood pockets)
54–68°F
Summer (June–August)
San Francisco's summer is its foggiest and — counterintuitively — coolest season. Karl the Fog blankets the city most mornings, highs stay at just 67–68°F, and the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf are genuinely cold in a t-shirt. The Mission and SoMa neighborhoods get more afternoon sun than the Sunset and Richmond. Every visitor who arrives expecting California sunshine and packs accordingly will be cold.
- Medium-weight jacket (essential, not optional)
- Light-to-mid-weight sweaters
- Windproof layer for waterfront visits
- Comfortable flat-soled walking shoes
50–70°F
Fall (September–November)
Fall is San Francisco's warmest and sunniest season — September delivers the city's highest temperatures at 70°F and October often brings the famous SF Indian summer. November marks the rapid return of rain. The micro-climate effect is at its most pronounced in fall: the Mission and Castro bask while the Outer Sunset stays cool. Pack layers for the full range from 50°F fog to 70°F sun.
- Light jacket for fog pockets
- Short-sleeve tops for sunny neighborhoods
- Waterproof shoes (November rains return)
- Flat ankle boots for hill walking

General Packing Tips for San Francisco
- 1.San Francisco's micro-climate gap is one of the most extreme of any city: Dolores Park in the Mission can be 10–15°F warmer than the Outer Sunset on the same afternoon — always check neighborhood-specific conditions when planning an SF day, not just the city-wide forecast.
- 2.SF summer is not California summer: June, July, and August are San Francisco's foggiest months with daily highs of only 67–68°F — visitors who pack for Los Angeles-style heat will be cold and miserable at Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge overlook.
- 3.San Francisco's hills make flat-soled footwear non-negotiable: Lombard Street, the Castro, Noe Valley, and the Haight all involve steep grades where heeled shoes make walking genuinely difficult — flat ankle boots or sneakers are the city's universal footwear standard.
