Kyoto Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season

Kyoto's humid subtropical basin climate swings from dry winter cold near 33°F to August highs around 91°F, with sakura crowds in early April and koyo color peaking in November. Pack refined, modest layers that cover shoulders and knees for temple visits, plus shoes you can slip off at Kiyomizu-dera and real walking shoes for the Fushimi Inari climb. Summer humidity traps heat in the basin worse than Tokyo; winter ryokan air dries skin. A compact umbrella and cobble-ready soles handle rain on Gion's lanes year-round.

By Season

33–52°F

Winter (December–February)

Kyoto winters are dry and cold, with January lows near 33°F and crisp mornings along the Philosopher's Path and Fushimi Inari. Ryokan and machiya heating dries skin; layer polished coats for temple dawns and Gion evenings without bulk.

  • Insulated mid-layer coat
  • Thermal base layers
  • Easy on/off walking shoes
  • Lip balm and heavy moisturizer

40–77°F

Spring (March–May)

Spring warms from March highs near 57°F to May near 77°F, with about 10 precip days monthly. Early April sakura draws massive queues at Philosopher's Path and Maruyama—layer for cool dawn photos and milder afternoons, and keep knees covered for shrine halls.

  • Light trench or layering jacket
  • Midi or knee-covering skirts/pants
  • Grip-sole walking sneakers
  • Compact umbrella

65–91°F

Summer (June–August)

Baiu rain starts in June (~12 precip days), then July–August peak heat hits 89–91°F with humidity the basin traps harder than Tokyo. Pack breathable modest coverage for Kiyomizu-dera, quick-dry fabrics, and serious rain protection for slick Hanamikoji-dori cobbles.

  • Moisture-wicking modest tops
  • Lightweight long pants or midi skirts
  • Breathable walking shoes
  • Compact umbrella and cooling towel

45–83°F

Fall (September–November)

Early fall still warm with typhoon risk in September, then October's best walking weather (highs ~72°F) and November koyo peaks in Higashiyama and Arashiyama. Layer for cool temple mornings and golden-hour crowds at Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji.

  • Medium-weight jacket
  • Long-sleeve layering tops
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Light scarf for temple mornings

General Packing Tips for Kyoto

  • 1.Dress for temple modesty in Kyoto—shoulders and knees covered at Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji, and To-ji—even on humid 91°F August days; a light cardigan or wrap solves short sleeves without overheating.
  • 2.Bring shoes you can slip on and off all day; many Kyoto temples require removing footwear, so clean socks and easy closures matter more than lace-up fashion boots.
  • 3.Prioritize real walking shoes over fashion flats: Fushimi Inari's roughly 4 km torii climb, gravel temple paths, and rain-slick Gion cobbles punish thin soles and smooth leather.
