Seattle Packing List — What to Pack for Every Season
Seattle's rain is almost always light drizzle rather than downpour — locals wear a waterproof shell jacket year-round and almost never carry umbrellas. Temperatures stay mild (37–76°F) year-round. The biggest packing mistakes: expecting summer sun in June (it's still rainy), wearing heels on Capitol Hill's steep wet hills, and packing an umbrella for Pike Place Market's wet cobblestone ramps.
By Season
37–51°F
Winter (December–February)
Seattle's rainiest months — December averages 17 precipitation days, January 15, and February 11. Temperatures are mild at 37–51°F but the persistent drizzle makes waterproof everything essential. A waterproof shell jacket over mid-weight layers handles most days. Pike Place Market's cobblestone ramps and Capitol Hill's steep hills demand flat-soled waterproof boots. Umbrellas are impractical in the wind off Puget Sound.
- Waterproof shell jacket (not an umbrella)
- Waterproof flat-soled ankle boots
- Mid-weight layering sweaters
- Waterproof daypack or bag
40–66°F
Spring (March–May)
Seattle spring is slow and still wet — March brings 14 rain days at 55°F, April 12 days at 60°F, and May finally drops to 9 days with 66°F highs. The waterproof shell jacket stays on through May. Capitol Hill and Queen Anne's hillside terrain remains slippery through spring. May marks the first reliable stretches of dry days.
- Waterproof shell jacket
- Light-to-mid layering pieces
- Waterproof ankle boots for Capitol Hill hills
- Sunglasses for May's first dry stretches
52–76°F
Summer (June–August)
Seattle's summer is genuinely wonderful — July and August average 76°F with only 5 rain days each. June is the transition month at 70°F with 8 rain days; the full Seattle summer doesn't arrive until early July. Light summer clothes handle July and August days, but the Elliott Bay waterfront stays windier and cooler than inland neighborhoods. A light layer is always useful for evening waterfront time.
- Lightweight summer tops and dresses
- Comfortable walking shoes for Pike Place cobblestones
- Light jacket for Elliott Bay waterfront evenings
- Sunscreen for the extended daylight hours
40–70°F
Fall (September–November)
Seattle fall is a sharp transition — September is still 70°F and pleasant with only 7 rain days, October brings the rain back at 60°F and 11 days, and November is the second wettest month at 51°F with 16 rain days. The waterproof shell comes back out in October and stays through May. Capitol Hill's and Pike Place's wet surfaces become slippery again.
- Light jacket for dry September
- Waterproof shell for October onward
- Waterproof boots returning in October
- Mid-weight layers for November's 51°F

General Packing Tips for Seattle
- 1.Seattle's rain culture rule: locals wear a waterproof shell jacket and almost never carry umbrellas — the city's constant light drizzle is better handled by a packable waterproof outer layer than an umbrella, which is unwieldy on steep Capitol Hill and Queen Anne streets and in the wind off Elliott Bay.
- 2.Waterproof flat-soled footwear is the single most important Seattle packing decision for most of the year — Pike Place Market's cobblestone ramps, Capitol Hill's steep hillside streets, and Queen Anne's inclines become genuinely slippery when wet, and heels or smooth-soled shoes create real fall risk on the city's most-visited terrain.
- 3.Seattle's summer (July and August) is dry, sunny, and genuinely warm at 76°F — but June still averages 8 rain days and visitors expecting full summer sun in June are regularly disappointed. Pack a waterproof layer through June and switch to full summer mode in early July.
